iPhone SE 2020

Finally a new budget device has been rolled out by Apple. The new device is iPhone SE 2020. This is the 2nd generation SE. “iPhone SE packs our most powerful chip into our most popular size at our most affordable price. It’s just what you’ve been waiting for” says Apple.

The namesake iPhone SE (1st Generation) was announced on March 21, 2016 and was discontinued by Apple on September 12, 2018. First generation iPhone SE was part of the ninth generation of the iPhone beside the expensive iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. The phone was spotted on Chinese website JD.com for pre-order.

It features Apple A9 SoC with an M9 motion coprocessor. It was initially launched with 16 GB or 64 GB of internal storage. The device has 12 megapixel rear-facing camera which could record video of 4K resolution at 30 frames per second.

Now Apple is back with a new moniker SE (Special Edition), Apple SE 2020 which was announced on April 15, 2020. It is part of the 13th generation of the iPhone, alongside high-end iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. The phone is considered as Apple’s cheapest phone of all time. Let’s deep-dive into the specifications of the successor of first-generation iPhone SE.

Specifications:

Design:

iPhone SE 2020

The design will be one of the major backslashes of the new device. The design is very similar to that of the iPhone 8 lineup. However, the premium essence of the iPhone is still there in it. The frame is an all aluminum frame with glass back. The back of the device incorporates a single-lens rear camera, microphone, and an LED flash.

The front portion is also glass and the it is very similar to the iPhone 8. The front has huge chins. The display is rated IP67 (maximum depth of 1 meter up to 30 minutes) to give the touch of toughness and longevity.

iPhone SE 2020 will be available in three colorways – White, Black, and Product Red.

The display of this device also giving the same Apple authentic essence. The display is a Retina HD LCD touchscreen with IPS technology. The display measures 4.7 inches screen with huge top and bottom chins.

The screen to body ratio is around 65% which is not up to current standards. The resolution of the screen is 1334-by-750-pixel with 326 ppi density. It has contrast ratio of 1400:1. It also has Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating.

If we talk about Touch ID, Apple has integrated fingerprint sensor built into the Home button.

Performance and Memory:

The all-new device is running on high-end Apple A13 Bionic chipset, the same processor that powers the iPhone 11. This impressive chipset is based on Hexa-Core technology. The configuration is 2 cores clocked at 2.65 GHz Lightning and 4 cores clocked at 1.8 GHz Thunder. The performance will be absolute, no doubts, on that. The GPU is made by Apple too, its a 4 core GPU.

In addition, Apple also introduced the Neural Engine (Third‑generation), a custom block of silicon. The engine has circuits tuned to improve artificial-intelligence software, called artificial neural networks, that are best at processing images and speech.

The RAM is 3GB. There are no such other variants of RAM available. The memory has, somehow, three variants – 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. On an important note, just like other Apple devices, we are not getting any expandable options as such.

On coming to the platform, the OS is the same iOS 13 with strong promise of regular updates by Apple, is just another upside.

Camera:

The camera unit is very interesting in this device. The camera performance is assured to be having the top-end specs like iPhone 11 Pro Max. However, there is only one camera unit on the back. The rear snapper is a 12-megapixel wide camera, with ƒ/1.8 aperture. It has digital zoom capability of 5x. The rear is also well equipped with OIS (optical image stabilization).

iPhone SE 2020 is capable of 4K video recording at 24 fps, 30 fps, or 60 fps, 1080p HD video recording at 30 fps or 60 fps, and 720p HD video recording at 30 fps. It also support Slo‑mo video for 1080p at 120 fps or 240 fps. There is dual-tone LED flash is also there for better flash balance.

Battery:

The battery is advertised to be better optimized by Apple this time. The device draws power from an 1821 mAh battery pack. Apple claims that the battery of iPhone SE 2020 lasts almost the same as iPhone 8. This battery pack is capable of fast charging which can charge up to 50% charge in 30 minutes with 18W adapter or higher that is sold separately by Apple. It is also advertised to be supporting Qi wireless charging.

Price:

The expected prices are –

3GB/64GB – $399 – Buy on Amazon

3GB/128GB – $449 – Buy on Amazon

3GB/256GB – $549 – Buy on Amazon

Final Impression:

On an honest note, the device is very confusing this time. It’s for sure targets a different budget segment consumers. The device is old-designed yet very powerful to match the blazing daily fast multitasking.

The camera is assumed to be top-notched, the processor is also amazing. There is a lack of proper Face ID system and design like iPhone 7 on front. This could be a backslash for the device. On average, the device seems fast, camera is top-notched if one can compromise in design, then the phone is their way to go.
